This summer, you helped bring the magic of Broadway in the ’Burbs to life — and for that, we are deeply grateful. But beyond the applause and stage lights lies the heart of our mission: giving every young performer their moment to shine. For many of the students in our after-school Playlab programs, the stage is more than just a place to perform. It’s a place to belong. A lifeline. A rare place where they can be seen, heard, and celebrated.
But too many of our kids are waiting in the wings. Michigan’s educational system has plummeted since COVID. We rank amongst the bottom ten in the nation disproportionately affecting black, brown, disabled and low-income students who are systemically underserved and left behind (EdTrust-Midwest, ‘25). Simultaneously, anxiety has increased by 134%, and depression has increased by 106% for youth nationally since 2010 (Haidt 2024). It’s no wonder our students are struggling.
Meanwhile, 73% of participants actively engaged in creative drama programs report increased reading levels, better comprehension of written test scenarios, and more active attendance and participation in school (DuPont). Our vision is to increase our education and mental health rankings by providing widespread access to the transformative powers of theater to as many students as possible.
